Economic
Empowerment
Economic and social empowerment puts girls and women in a
stronger position and gives them the agency to make decisions that promote
their own health and well-being as well as that of their families. We believe
that social and economic empowerment is a key factor to improving sexual and
reproductive health and rights of girls and women. It enhances their ability to
have a voice in decision making processes.
It also enables them to ensure that water, sanitation and hygiene
services respond to their needs. It is with this regard that we have been
implementing the following WASH interventions.
-
Hygiene promotion
-
Provision of water tanks to schools and
institutions
We define empowerment of women and girls as the expansion of
choice and strengthening of voice through the transformation of power
relations, so women and girls have more control over their lives and future. We
have therefore established savings and lending groups for women and gender
equality sessions for men.
We also have community-based microfinance programes. Chicken
for fee is one such initiative where women and children are given a capital of
improved chicken. Once new offsprings come up, a different lot of people
benefit and therefore pass on is encouraged. This initiative has seen many
parents benefit from this intervention and therefore able to support school fee
payments for their children.
We are also seeking to contribute to increased employability
and income generating opportunities for young women and men through provision
of demand driven quality vocational and skills training, and access to
productive resources. We are also looking forward incorporating capacity
building sessions in all our interventions.
